Thoughts on Workshops for Ministries: Anger Management
What power does partnership through church workshops and team building have on ministries?
It’s important to understand the power that is available in partnership and then put that power to work for you. There is power in Church workshops and simple team building exercises. Mother Teresa said, “You can do what I cannot do. I can do what you cannot do. Together, we can do great things.”
My husband and I came up with this program out of our experience working with other ministries. We have sat on varying panels and realize that one person cannot do it all. Just like in business, outsourcing certain functions can allow you to focus on your core competencies. 15 minute team building games can take your group meetings to the next level. Even within a church there are different ministries and systems that work together in different but interconnected ways. What is your ministry’s, family, or even business’ core competencies? This question can be applied to all types of organizational units and different types of church ministries.
I grew up in the church, shout out to First Baptist Church of Glen Cove New York! My spiritual foundation is based upon seeing people learn in groups. I remember back to the services where guest preachers would come in. I loved listening to my pastor, but hearing the word from either an outside or associate minister re-energized the congregation.
My favorite service of the year was held on Good Friday. I loved when the preachers would speak on the seven last words from different perspectives. Not knowing it then, these services reinforced in me a desire to unify and learn from unique voices. Diversity of thoughts, opinions, nationalities and even religious backgrounds can bring forth so much learning and inspiration.
Therefore, it is important to be creative in your teaching. Some of the reasons people choose a church include the quality of the sermons, feeling welcome, relationships building with family/friends, education for kids, location/accessibility, and opportunities for involvement. Workshop ideas on skill building such as anger management fuels these reasons. It provides opportunity for building relationships, learning and quality content that can be used in different facets of that members life.
What are some of the obstacles that we have face while conducting workshops/team building with ministries?
Different pastors have told me that I conduct all of our church workshops and seminars. It is almost like working with other leaders presents a threat to their leadership. So why aren’t all community leaders helping to advance the kingdom of God? There is almost an omni-competent perception that they believe they know more about the Bible and leadership and preaching and administration and fundraising and evangelism and managing staff and prayer than anybody else does.
This is a dangerous thinking pattern to fall into. If the president of the United States adopted this principle, what would be the point of having a cabinet, senate, judicial branch etc. If all CEO’s of corporations adopted this thought pattern what would be the point of having a CFO, Board of Directors, stock holders, product line focus groups, consultants, etc. It is ok, to not know everything. It is ok to not do everything. Your organizations have multiple members and units. However, ultimately we are all serving the same God under the same spirit. “For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.” –1 Corinthians 12:12
We consider our business our ministry. We love God and because we love God we want to love others. God has blessed us with certain life experiences, education and training that we want to share. I have received a degree in Psychology from Rutgers University and completed my Masters in Industrial/Organizational and Doctorate degree in Business Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. I have also completed a second Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. These degrees allow me to pursue my biggest passions: the observation of life through another person’s perspective, and the practice of questioning life’s boundaries and assumptions.
My husband has over 15 years of sales experience functioning as a top level competitor in retail, insurance, real estate, and both rental property and vehicle sales. Durron also is a minister, public speaker, entertainer, and care-giver to cancer patients. With that being said, he has spent his life communicating with and helping others. He acquired his Life Coaching Certification from New Life Coaching Inc and now works closely with clients to identify their dreams and the path to achieve them.

Church workshops and team tap into the very reasons why your members have chosen to worship with your ministry. What are your thoughts about church growth as it applies to workshops and seminars?
